W Afryce przed kilkoma stuleciami dzik występował licznie na północ od Sahary oraz w dolinie Nilu, aż po obszary na południe od Chartum w Sudanie. Dziś gatunek ten jest w północnej Afryce rzadki. Podgatunki, które żyły niegdyś od południowej Turcji po Palestynę (Sus scrofa libycus) jak i od Egiptu po Sudan (Sus scrofa barbarus) uważa się za wymarłe. Na Półwyspie Arabskim dzik występuje jedynie na skrajnej północy.
